Description: Attendees can expect to gain a technical understanding of common deterioration mechanisms, explore a variety of field investigation methods, and navigate current related ACI and ICRI guide documents. A case study of a recent isolated partial balcony collapse will then be discussed, examining the investigative steps taken to identify the failure mode and the resulting remediation strategy.
More about presenter, Colin Rueb
Colin Rueb is a licensed structural engineer with a background in concrete forensics and deterioration analysis. A proud alumnus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), he earned both his B.S. (2012) and M.S. (2014) in Civil Engineering with a concentration in structures. His time at UIUC laid the technical foundation for a career dedicated to the science of the built environment.
Mr. Rueb specializes in diagnosing and resolving complex structural challenges within cast-in-place and prestressed concrete systems. His expertise centers on the fundamental mechanisms of concrete failure allowing him to develop high-performance repair designs that restore structural integrity.
Beyond his primary focus on concrete, Colin has conducted comprehensive failure investigations and condition surveys across a diverse range of materials, including wood, masonry, and steel. He utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to forensic engineering, combining thorough field investigations with sophisticated nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques to provide data-driven insights.
Currently, Colin serves on the Board of Directors for the International Concrete Repair Institute Chicago Chapter while also actively supporting several American Concrete Institute technical committees.
